Biographical / Historical
The Denver Civic Theatre began in cooperation with the University of Denver in 1929 as the University Civic Theatre. The theatre company was housed in Margery Reed Hall along with the University of Denver Theatre Department for 24 years. University Civic Theatre was supported by Margery Reed, Florence Martin, and Helen Bonfils. As membership expanded and wartime restrictions on building and remodeling theatres came into effect, Helen Bonfils gifted the Bonfils Theatre to the company. This was the start of the name change, Denver Civic Theatre.
