Abstract

Dr. Robert Angell was a professor of biology at the University of Denver, the president of the faculty senate, and an active member of the conservation community in Denver. He built animal protection organizations People Allied With Wildlife, the Mt. Evans Animal Refuge Coalition, and WildWork to help fight for conservation of the mountain goats on Mt Evans, fought against trapping, and stopped the hunting of bears in Colorado. His papers include information about these organizations and the work they did, plays and operettas that he wrote, personal material, and photographs from his life.

Biographical / Historical

Dr. Robert Walker Angell was born April 29, 1929 to George Angell and Dorothy Walker Angell. After graduating high school, he enlisted in the Army Air Force. When he was honorably discharged, he attended Beloit College where he pursued a degree in paleozoology. This is also where he met his first wife, Elissa Becker. He received a master's degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He did post-doctoral work at Duke University. In 1967, he accepted a position at the University of Denver as a professor of biology where he stayed until 1991. He directed the university's field station on Mt. Evans every summer, participated in the university's opera program, and was the president for the DU faculty senate. During this time, he established the Elissa Becker Angell Opera Fund. Elissa and RObert Angell also worked as conservationists for the wildlife in Colorado. They established the People Allied With Wildife organization, the Mt Evans Animal Refuge Coalition, and worked with WildWork. He worked to successfully introduce an initaitive that would stop the trapping of animals, the illegal shooting of mountain goats, and prohibit the hunting of spring bears. The collection for Robert Angell includes plays and operettas that he wrote, biographical materials such as diplomas and a journal form 1967, videos and photographs from his life, of plays that he attended, and Mt. Evans ecology. There is also extensive information from People Allied With Wildlife and the Mt. Evans Animal Refuge Coalition. This includes letters to congress people, mailing information, legislative information for animal protections, and information about the animals living on Mt. Evans.
