Biographical / Historical
Interfraternity council began at the University of Denver in 1917 after the previous greek organization governing body Greek Council split into IFC and Panhellenic. The first six member fraternities were Beta Theta Pi, Kappa Sigma, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Alpha Pi Nu (a local fraternity), and Lambda Chi Alpha. Between 1929-1931, four DU fraternities were able to erect houses on campus: Beta Theta Pi, Kappa Sigma, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and Lambda Chi Alpha. In 1972, sixteen different fraternities were represented on the DU IFC. As of 2022, the DU IFC consists of seven member fraternities: Beta Theta Pi, Delta Chi, Lambda Chi Alpha, Pi Kappa Phi, Sigma Chi, Theta Chi, and Zeta Beta Tau. Other fraternities are represented by the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC).
The IFC is designed to promote the interests of its member fraternities alongside the interestes of the University and greater community. The IFC acts as a liason with campus administration, is responsible for setting fraternity rush guidelines, yearly rush schedules, publishes promotional material, and supports extracurricular projects within its membership.
An IFC generally exists on any college campus with two more more fraternities on campus. The national version of IFC is the North American Interfraternity Conference (or NIC; formerly known as the National Interfraternity Conference). Member fraternities each provide one delegate to the NIC House of Delegates, while executive and administrative powers are vested in a nine-person elected board of directors from various member fraternities.
