Biographical / Historical
Beta Theta Pi (ΒΘΠ), known generally as Beta, was founded at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in 1839, making it one of the oldest social fraternities in North America. The University of Denver chapter (Alpha Zeta) was established on February 28th, 1889, was inactive from 2007-2014 and has been active since, as of 2022. The first chancellor of DU David H. Moore was a Beta alum from Ohio University and was instrumental in establishing the chapter at DU with a group of fifteen originating members. In the early days of the chapter, there was no house and meetings were held in Dean Shattuck's office with minutes taken on his stationery. Later, the group rented rooms above a grocery at the northeat corner of Evans and Milwaukee, convenient to the new Denver Tramway, for 3-4 years. Alpha Zeta moved several more times, including occupying a house at 2284 S. Josephine for nearly twenty years, before completion of the Beta Theta Pi residence at 2060 S. Gaylord.
