Biographical / Historical

In 1981, DU student Ronald Payne founded the Gay and Lesbian Student Support Group (GLSSG) after visiting Dartmouth and learning they had a similar group on that campus.Though the GLB group did not initially receive the necessary two-thirds vote from the DU Student Senate for official group recognition, they were approved in 1982 after re-applying as a service organization. In 1987, the name changed to the DU Gay and Lesbian Alliance (DUGLA).

Between 1991 and 1996, the group was very active and held yearly events around National Coming Out Day/Week/Month. In 1996, the group attempted to organized the 3rd annual conference for Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Student Leadership but it was canceled due to low registration.

In 1992, the group changed its name to the Lesbian Gay and Bisexual Alliance (LGBA). By 2003 (at latest), the group’s name had changed to DU Pride. By 2006 (at latest), the group became the Queer Student Alliance, which is still the name of this active organization as of 2023.
