Walter J. Williams Papers
Abstract
Walter John Williams was a research professor for the University of Denver Physics Department until his retiement in 2000. He worked with the Denver Research Institute in the 1960s and 1970s. There are boxes in this collection that contain photographs, reels, and equipment from his time working in the Physics department and for the atmospheric research done through the Denver Research Institute.

Biographical / Historical
Walter John Williams was born in Chicago on May 1, 1935. In 1942, he moved to Denver when his father took a professorship at the Illiff School of Theology. He met his wife, Norma Lee Hubka, in high school. After high school, Walter went to the University of Rochester but transferred back to the University of Denver to finish his degree in mathematics. During his senior year, his film developing skills got him a part-time job in the Physics department with the upper atmospheric research group headed by Dr. Dave Murcray. After he graduated, he became a full-time member of the team while working on his M.S. in Physics. Throughout his career, his field research took him to Alamogordo, New Mexico, Alaska, Antarctica, and Sweden. Walter John Williams retired from the University of Denver, after serving as a research professor, in July of 2000. He died Spetember 28, 2022.
