Biographical / Historical

Ved Nanda studied at Punjab University and Delhi University in India and Northwestern University in Illinois. In 1965, Nanda became a professor of international law at the University of Denver, where he worked for nearly 60 years. He founded the Denver Journal of International Law and Policy in 1971, serving as its faculty advisor until 2018, and the International Legal Studies Program in 1972, serving as its director and director emeritus. He introduced the first international human rights law course at the law school and was the University’s Vice Provost of Internationalization from 1994 to 2008, during which he launched the Cherrington Global Scholars program after forging exchange agreements with 100 universities around the globe. He was named John Evans Professor in 1991 and launched the Ved Nanda Center for International and Comparative Law in 2006, and since its inception, he was the director of the Center. He was President of the World Jurist Association and Vice President of the American Society of International Law. Nanda authored and co-authored 24 books and over 225 chapters and law review articles on the topics of international and comparative law. In 2018, he received the Padma Bhusan award, the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, for his work in the field of literature and education. Ved Nanda passed away on January 1, 2024.

Arrangement

This collection is divided into three series. Series 1: Papers contains articles written by Nanda, press releases, papers with editing marks, correspondence, photos, and professional papers related to Nanda's career at DU. Series 2: Teaching Materials includes student papers and class materials such as syllabi, exams, course evaluations, and more. Series 3: Ephemera contains ephemera collected by Nanda from conferences and events as well as his graduation regalia from University of Denver commencement ceremonies.
