Biographical / Historical
The Honors Program offers a broad liberal education rooted in the arts and sciences. The program acts as a clearinghouse for research, internship and service opportunities. It also provides funding for the thesis work or culminating projects necessary for graduation with distinction in the major.
The Honors Program has been in existence since 1964. It started out as Centennial Scholars, then changed to Coordinated Humanities and now it is the Honors Program. The Honors Program is an academic program under the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Academic Programs. The aim of the program is to challenge students to cultivate strong habits of critical thinking, creativity, and scholarship and to offer close support for advanced work. Students in the Honors Program have the best of both worlds: the small classes and close community of a liberal arts college and the opportunities and resources of a research university.
