Nursing Program Records

In 1948, a collaboration between Children’s, Presbyterian and St. Luke’s Hospitals launched a nursing associate degree program in the Junior College at the University of Denver. In the fall of 1956, University of Denver launched its own nursing program with the support of Presbyterian Hospital. Students spent their first three quarters of the program at the University Park Campus and then spent time at Presbyterian Hospital for continued learning.

University of Denver’s school of nursing was formally accredited on March 7, 1960, but was discontinued shortly after, likely due to competition from nearby health science schools. In 1978, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program was established for licensed nurses with associate or diploma degrees to advance their careers. In 1980, thanks to a federal grant, University of Denver re-launched the School of Nursing and was accredited in 1982. Amidst financial hardships in 1984, the Chancellor announces closure of School of Nursing with reorganization of university. Shortly after in 1986, the University considers but ultimately decides against a joint venture for a College of Nursing with AMI Presbyterian Denver Hospital. The final University of Denver nursing students graduate in 1987 and the school is officially closed.
