The John M. Read Letters consist of four letters sent by or to John M. Read of Philadelphia. The letters deal with legal matters and include some personal notes.

Biographical / Historical

John Meredith Read was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1797 and graduate from the University of Pennsylavnia. He was an attorney and judge in Pennsylvania from 1818 to 1872, serving on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court from 1858 to 1872. His son, also named John Meredith Read, was born in 1837 in Philadelphia. He studied at Brown University and Albany Law School and became an attorney in Albany, New York. From 1869 to 1879, he served as a diplomat of the US government in France and Greece.
