Biographical / Historical
Mary Dorcas (Word) Walker, who preferred to be called Dorcas, was born in 1925 in St. Louis, Missouri. Her family lived in Illinois until they moved to Monte Vista, Colorado in the 1930’s. Dorcas’ father owned Rio Grande Hardware in Monte Vista. Before transferring to the University of Denver, Dorcas attended MacMurray College in Illinois. Dorcas was married to Lory T. Walker in 1950. They first lived in Fort Collins where her husband studied veterinary medicine at CSU (formerly, Colorado A&M) and where Dorcas taught. After Lory graduated they lived in Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and finally settled in Phoenix, Arizona. She had 6 children and eventually passed away in January 2017.
