Abstract

In 2016, in conjuction with Carson Brierly Giffin Dance Library's annual exhibit "Rising Stars: Denver Civic Ballet and Ballet Guild," oral histories were conducted to be included in the supplemental documentary for the exhibit. These oral histories include interviews with former dancers, costumers, and journalists. In 2019, the Carson Brierly Giffin Dance Library rebranded as The Dance Archive.

Biographical / Historical

(Metropolitan) Denver Civic Ballet was created through the collaboration of local dance teachers in 1958 and existed until 1979. The company consisted of dancers from eight local studios and performed under the artistic direction of guests from American Ballet Theatre (Fernand Nault (1959) and Enrique Martinez (1961-1969)) and Metropolitan Opera Ballet (Milenko Banovitch (1972-1979)). The company performed classic and original works each year along with its main production of 'The Nutcracker,' taking place in Denver's Auditorium Theatre in collaboration with the Denver Symphony Orchestra.
