Abstract

This office was founded as the Office of Multicultural Affairs, changed in 2002 to The Center for Multicultural Excellence (CME). The functions of this office are, as of 2024, largely fulfilled by both the The Cultural Center, which lives within Student Affairs and the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, which lives within the Chancellor's Office and primarily supports faculty and staff.

The Office of Multicultural Affairs was formed to work with students, faculty, staff, and alumni to raise awareness and support of diversity, including racial, sexual, gender, and economic diversity. The materials in the collection include administrative documents, event posters, research articles, and internal group documents. The role of the center until its connection to Student Affairs was to support faculty, staff, and student groups based on identity.

In the Fall of 2016, the CME was divided into affiliate-focused unites, distributed among the tri-Chief Diversity Officer model. This is when the Office of Inclusion, Equity & Education (IEE) was formed. The IEE Office provides Inclusive Excellence/DEI/social justice educational programming and services in continuation of what had been part of the duties of CME. As of June 2020, IEE was located in the division of Student Affairs & Inclusive Excellence, as part of the Dean of Students Office. IEE functions include programs and events, workshops and trainings, consultaions, and creating and sharing resources. IEE was behind the DU DialogUes initiative. IEE has campus partners such as Housing and Residential Education (HRE) for in-hall programming, the Conflict Resolution Institue (CRI) for campus programming, and the Communications Studies Department (COMN) for a for-credit course. IEE also conducted multiple years of contracted partnership with the Sustained Dialogue Institute (SDI) out of Washington, DC, to provide curriculum and facilitator training as a jump-start to campus efforts.
