Biographical / Historical

The Inter-University High Altitude Labs (IUHAL) were created in 1948 as a consortium between several universities for the study of cosmic rays. Two high altitude labs under the ownership of the University of Denver were built at Mount Evans and Echo Lake. Mount Evans was built independently in 1935 and was brought under IUHAL's banner in 1948 with the creation of the Echo Lake lab. The usage of high altitude labs decreased sharply in the 1960s due... to the development of early "atom smashers," later leading to the Hadron Collider in Switzerland. Despite this, the labs remained under use by the University of Denver's (DU) Department of Physics and Astronomy until 1990, when they transferred to use under the Biology and Natural Sciences Departments at DU.
