Abstract Contains check protector (check writing machine) which was created in 1917 by the Checkometer Sales Company owned by Theodore Hirschberg in Chicago, Illinois. It was developed in Chicago because check fraud was rampent there in the early 1900s. The machine was designed to punch, print, and watermark paychecks that forgers could not duplicate. It became the paymaster machine in the 1950s. The paymaster machines are still currently sold. On the cover of the machine: "F and E Check Protector."...
