Bernstein Family Papers

Overview Samuel and Heloise Bernstein moved from New York before their only child, Leonard, was born in Denver. Samuel worked in retail clothing. Leonard worked for Denver and Rio Grande RR for over 50 years. Most of the documents center around Heloise, Samuel and Leonard. Collection contains marriage announcements and certificates, death certificates, military certificates, postcards, photographs, and scrapbooks related to the Bernstein family from 1893 through 1966.

Bessie Wedgle Wedding Dress

Overview

Ellis and Bessie Ruttman Wedgle were married in Denver in 1914 after a brief courtship.The two arrived in the United States around 1912, Ellis emigrating from Poland and Bessie from Russia. In Denver, Ellis worked as a pawnbroker, and Bessie was a seamstress. They lived in Denver's west-side immigrant community and raised four children there. The collection consists of one item, the wedding dress worn by Bessie Wedgle in 1914.

Overview Charles Rosenbaum was born in Salem, Massachusetts on April 9, 1901 to Russian Jewish immigrants. The family moved to Denver in 1905, where his father died of tuberculosis. Overview Congregation Emanuel, the oldest synagogue in Colorado, was founded in Denver by a group of mostly German Jewish immigrants.
