Bernice Cooke Laverty Papers

Overview Bernice Cooke Laverty was born in Calfornia in 1904. She served as the University of Denver Lamont School of Music's speech teacher for a number of years. This collection contains programs and photographs from various plays and musicals directed by Laverty as well as correspondence, musical scores, songbooks, scripts and teacher's guides.

Bernie Eisenstat Family Papers

Overview Raymond Stone compiled and edited a book on the Chepelevskys of Slonim, the Eisenstadts of Telechan, and the Vernikovskys of Slonim. He has sketches of various family members and a family tree back to the 1800s in the book. Also in the collection is a folder with a family tree of the Eisenstadt family that goes back to about 1417, a two-page success story by Ray Stone, and a Stone/Eisenstat/Chappell Family roster.

Overview Mortiz Bernstein was born in Koenigsburg, Prussia in 1866 and died in Denver, Colorado in 1918. He came to Walsenburg, Colorado in about 1885 and after working as an empoyee, he bought the store. His wife was Theresa Altschul Bernstein and their daughter was Eva Bernstein Stark. A wedding photo shows the wedding party at the marriage of Rose Bernstein, the younger sister of Moritz, to Max Striker. Overview Collection contains (19) digitized photographs of the Bernstein family. Abe Perlmutter was born in Russia in 1893 and died in Denver on January 15, 1985. He came to the United States on his own when he was 15. At age 19 he became a journeyman mason in New York and saved enough money to bring his family to New York. Overview Samuel and Heloise Bernstein moved from New York before their only child, Leonard, was born in Denver. Samuel worked in retail clothing. Leonard worked for Denver and Rio Grande RR for over 50 years. Most of the documents center around Heloise, Samuel and Leonard. Collection contains marriage announcements and certificates, death certificates, military certificates, postcards, photographs, and scrapbooks related to the Bernstein family from 1893 through 1966.

Bessie Wedgle Wedding Dress

Overview

Ellis and Bessie Ruttman Wedgle were married in Denver in 1914 after a brief courtship.The two arrived in the United States around 1912, Ellis emigrating from Poland and Bessie from Russia. In Denver, Ellis worked as a pawnbroker, and Bessie was a seamstress. They lived in Denver's west-side immigrant community and raised four children there. The collection consists of one item, the wedding dress worn by Bessie Wedgle in 1914.

Overview In 1926, Beth David Sisterhood was founded in an effort to create a new Hebrew school and Jewish social center for the West Colfax area of Denver, Colorado. The Beth David Hebrew School and Center met at the home of the Reverend and Mrs. Jacob Gordon at 1490 Julian Street. Overview Beth HaMedrosh Hagodol Congregation (BMH-the Great House of Study) was establsihed in 1892 in a group of rented rooms above co-founder Henry Plonsky's shoe and boot store on Larimer Street in Denver, Colorado. It officially incorporated in 1897 and grew to become Denver's largest modern Orthodox Jewish congregation. Overview In 1918 the Moshev Zkenim (Organization of Elders) Home and Society was incorporated in Denver with Ed Grimes (who had been a Cotopaxi resident) as president. The cornerstone was laid on June 22, 1919. The facility opened in 1920 and the name was changed to the Beth Israel Hospital Home.
