Abstract

Rabbi Charles Eliezer Hillel Kauvar is shown in profile in a copy of a chalk drawing. He became the first rabbi of the Beth HaMedrosh Hagodol (BMH) Synagogue in 1901 and served in that position for more than 50 years. Rabbi Kauvar introduced traditional Judaism within a modern American context to his congregants. He was a Zionist and support of the Jewish Consumptives' Relief Society.

One Winsor Spiral Sketchbook, size 5 x 8, filled with pencil sketches of buildings, landscapes and seascapes, one watercolor and a few ink drawings. Several of the sketches have locations in and around Quebec written on them. Sketch book is dated "Summer 1956" on front cover; "Maria Lowenstein" is also written on cover. Stamped "Plankenhorn Stationary Co. Williamsport 2, PA" with "20" written in top right corner of front cover; presumably it was priced at 20 cents.

One sketch is of Losch Farm Machinery which was located in Mansfield, PA about 50 miles north of Williamsport. Sketch book is not dated but is identical to sketchbook dated 1956. Stamped "Plankenhorn Stationary Co. Williamsport 2, PA" with "20" written in top right corner of front cover; presumably it was priced at 20 cents.
