William F. Zaranka was born December 22, 1944 in Elizabeth, New Jersey. In 1969, "Bill" first came to Colorado and the University of Denver as a creative writing student where he earned his PhD in creative writing and literature in 1974. He took his first position as an assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania before returning to DU in 1978 to chair the creative writing program.
