Abstract

The Beck Archives Photograph Collection contains photographs, negatives, and other materials which reflect the rich, varied, and vibrant Jewish experience in the Rocky Mountain region, with a special emphasis on Colorado. It also contains some photographs from other states and countries.

Abstract Benjamin M. Blumberg (1911-1978) was in the newspaper business and was a reporter or editor for a number of Colorado newspapers, many of which focused on Colorado's Jewish community. Blumberg held leadership positions with many Jewish community organizations, including Allied Jewish Community Council, B'nai B'rith Lodge #171 in Denver, and the Jewish Youth Council in Denver. Abstract Fred Veston (1899-1980) was born in Kraków, Austria-Hungary (now Poland) and survived the Holocaust by fleeing east, until reaching Lemberg (now Lviv, Ukraine). Seeing it was no better than Kraków. He then made his way to south western Poland and the Tatra Mountains, where Polish partisan groups continued to fight the German forces. Abstract

The collection contains three (3) series: photographs, clippings, and material culture. The photographs include digital copies of a portrait photograph of George G. Klein and two photographs of grave. The clippings include newspaper articles about the murder of police detective George Klein in 1919. The material culture includes a certificate recognizing George Klein for his service with the related dedication event flier, and a Denver Police Museum coin.

Abstract Joseph Scher was born in Latvia in 1884 and died in Denver in 1969. He emigrated in 1904 and graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a BA degree in Sociology and Economics in 1913. Joseph Scher joined the Immigration Service in 1918 and was an investigator for 32 years. He married Rose Saperstein of Pennsylvania that same year. Abstract

Harry Pells was Jewish businessman in Denver, CO. He owned and operated an insurance agency and was an active marine. Harry Pells enlisted in the Army in both WWI and WWII. He was later involved in veterans’ organizations, such as the Jewish War Veterans and the American Legion where he organized a toy drive that sent over 50,000 toys to Europe. Collection contains personal papers, news clippings, pamphlets and, a newsletter related to Harry Pells from 1918 through 1986.

Abstract

The first Jewish families arrived in Las Vegas, New Mexico in 1878 and Congregation Monefiore was formed in 1884. J. E. Rosenwald Lodge, No. 545, I.O.B.B was organized in 1902, the second B'nai B'rith Chapter in New Mexico. The collection contains a stamp press with the corporate seal, two ledgers with Minutes (1902-1970), and two ledgers with financial information, including dues payments by members (1902-1980).

Collection contains family documents and material objects related to the Loeb Family. Many of these items relate directly to the Holocaust and WWII. Important items include German passports and IDs, documents relating firsthand accounts of WWII and the Holocaust, photographs from before, during, and after the war, including photographs of Ernest Loeb as a US soldier in Germany, Ernest Loeb's Bronze Star Medal, scrapbooks, early German school report cards, and Jewish books of scripture.
