Born and raised in the West Colfax neighborhood, Leonard Alterman excelled at basketball in both AAU and at North High School. Alterman parleyed this success into a scholarship at the University of Denver, and after service in WW2, a short career with the old Denver Nuggets in the NBA's predecessor league, the National Basketball League.
