Abstract

Collection contains books and videos, related to Lillian Hoffman from 1960 through 2014. Lillian Hoffman was a founding and active member of the Colorado Committee of Concern for Soviet Jewry. She began public Jewish protests in Denver and was the first to speak to a Soviet Jewish prisoner.

Abstract Soviet Jews who wanted to emigrate from the Soviet Union were known as "Refuseniks." American Jewish students formed the Struggle for Soviet Jewry (SSSJ) in 1964 and the American Jewish Committee on Soviet Jewry (AJCSI) was also organized that year. Rabbi Samuel Adelman, rabbi of the BMH synagogue, spoke at Temple Emanuel and urged the liberal congregation to help Soviet Jews. Deborah Anne Palmieri is the Honorary Consul General of the Russian Federation in the State of Colorado. Palmieri's collection includes digital copies of documents, photographs, and audio files related to the life of late Russian Ambassador to the United States Yuli Mikhailovich Vorontsov. All original documents are still held by Palmieri.

Abstract Leonid B. Heifets was born 1926 in what is now Belarus. Dr. Heifets began his medical training at age 16, obtaining an MD, PhD and ScD. He participated with the World Health Organization as a member of Russian medical expeditions to the Congo in 1960 and 1962. He immigrated to the United States in 1979 and was employed by the National Jewish Hospital as head of the Mycobacteriology laboratory for 32 years.
