George Nathan and Fanny Herzel, 1929-1990

Abstract

Originally from Latvia, George Herzel was a Hebrew teacher and scholar in Denver from 1928 until 1946. George wrote several unpublished manuscripts on Jewish topics, two Jewish guidebooks, essays, and an autobiography. Both George and his wife Fanny (born in Poland, married in 1910) were certified notary publics.

Joseph Shapiro owned the Shapiro Hebrew Book Store at 3188 W. Colfax Avenue in Denver, Colorado. The collection contains three copies of "Passover" by Dr. A. Th. Phillips. The books are each stamped: "Joseph Shapiro Hebrew book Store, 3188 W. Colfax Ave.-Al. 5840 Denver 4, Colorado."

Abstract Linas Hazedek was established as an Orthodox Jewish non-profit benevolent organization. The constitution for the organization dates to September 1921, although the organization was not incorporated by the State of Colorado until 1955. The organization provided visits to sick members and performed services and last rites for deceased members. All donations to the organization were to be used for the funeral expenses of the members. This is a Rosh Hashana Prayer Book in Hebrew, from 1827. It is associated with Ashkenazi, and was transliterated by Machzor. The cover of this book is brown, with considerable staining, water damage, and other damages. The pages of this book are also water damaged and dirty, though still legible. There is writing in the front and back covers of the book. The first page is illustrated.
