Biography
Alfred Lang was born in Karlsbad, Austria. He immigrated to the United States at the age of 15, to live with his uncle, Mr. Lederer, in Pittsfield, Massachussetts. He lived with him for one year. Then, his father, stepmother, two brothers, and two sisters arrived in the U.S. from Karlsbad. The family settled in Omaha, Nebraska. He had studied English in Karlsbad, though never attending school in the U.S. Alfred, his father, and his uncle went into business Omaha.
In 1896, Alfred left Omaha for Los Angeles, CA. He stopped in Denver on the way, fell in love with the Rocky Mountains, and didnt make it to Los Angeles until 1938. During the summer of 1898, he climbed Pikes Peak twice and rode the cog rail down. He met his wife, Sarah Edelman Lang, in her family's kosher restaurant in Denver. The two were married February 25, 1900. They raised eight (8) children, 4 boys and 4 girls. Josephine Lang Tanzer is the youngest child.
Alfred worked peddling merchandise to the mining camps in the Idaho Springs area. Later, he opened a general merchandise store on Larimer St. where his oldest daughter, Mrs. Phil Brown, worked until her marriage. Both Alfred and Sarah joined the BMH synagogue before Rabbi Charles Kauvar was its spiritual leader.
