Biography
Caroline "Carrie" Shevelson Benjamin was born in Russia in 1841 and died in New York in 1931. Her family immigrated to the United States and settled in New York. Carrie Shevelson graduated from Syracuse University in 1881. After she married Maurice C. Benjamin, she relocated to Denver, where she was appointed by the governor to the Colorado Board of Charities. She was a founder of the Denver Women's Club and the Denver Section of the National Council of Jewish Women. Carrie Benjamin attended the Parliament of Religions of the Chicago World's Fair of 1893, where the National Council of Jewish Women was founded. Carrie Benjamin, returned home to Denver, Colorado and organized the Council's Denver section in October 1893. Thirty-nine women met at Temple Emanuel and elected Carrie Benjamin the first president. Carrie Benjamin and the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) worked in the areas of religion, teaching, and philanthropy.
