Biography

Gertrude Miller Philippe was a Jewish Denverite. She was born around 1920 around Denver. She married Frank Philippe, and the two went on to build a log cabin in Frisco, Co. around 1946. During WWII, Gertrude worked as a civilian in the small arms ammunition division of Remington Arms while Frank was stationed in Sacramento with the Signal Corps. When he was transferred to Louisiana Gertrude joined him, and helped as a gun repair woman. After the war, the two began building the cabin by hand. The couple were avid skiers, snow-shoers, and explorers. In 1949 her son Robert was born. Robert went on to be a commercial real estate developer. Gertrude and Frank volunteered with the International Executive Service Corps (IESC). They travelled with IESC from 1974 to 1984, visiting countries around the world. After Frank died, Gertrude remarried in 1987 to a concert violinist, Bert Naster.

Abstract

Frank Phillipe's great-grandfather Solomon Philippe, a saloon owner, came to Leadville in the 1800's. Gertrude Miller Phillipe and Frank Phillipe built a log cabin in Frisco. Son Robert Phillipe rescued and renovated an 1880 Denver & Rio Grande narrow-gauge railroad car and re-purposed it as his real estate office. He also restored an 1875 engine and tender.
