Phillips, John E.
Biography
John E. Phillips was a newspaper man in Irwin and Crested Butte in Gunnison County, Colorado. He began the Elk Mountain Pilot in Irwin in 1880. When the silver petered out, Phillips moved his printing plant by bobsled to the railroad. In 1884, he set up in Crested Butte and ran the Elk Mountain Pilot until 1894. He then went to Cripple and made a fortune in gold mining.

He moved the printing plant to Crested Butte, Colorado and ran the paper until 1893. Among others, he reported on Otto Mears and Simon Guggenheim.
