Abstract

Tom Lantos was a Holocaust survivor who served in the U.S. House of Representatives, the only Holocaust survivor to serve in the U.S. Congress. As a Hungarian-born Jew, he escaped German labor camps by seeking refuge in a Budapest building protected by the diplomatic standing of the Swedish Raoul Wallenberg. After the end of the war, Lantos found that his immediate family had been killed, but his sweetheart Annette Tillemann was still alive in Switzerland.... They were married for over 50 years. During his career, he advocated for human rights and the eradication of oppression.
