Abstract

The document contains a clipped article from the The Masonic News-Digest written by Colonel John M. Chivington titled "The Pet Lambs." It contains a first person account of a series of military engagments in New Mexico, Missouri, and Colorado that Chivington participated in as an officer in the Union army during the American Civil War. The document also contains an account of an address given by Chivington at the annual meeting of Colorado Pioneers in Denver on September 13, 1983, describing the events of the Sand Creek Massacre, as well as defending his actions during said event. Both "The Pet Lambs" and Chivington's address on Sand Creek were both published initially in The Denver Republican. "The Pet Lambs" is also reproduced as a typed transcription, with large portions left out from the published article. Multiple statements to the The Daily Free Press from Chivington are also included, in which he defends himself against allegations made against him by other publications in regards to his involvement in the Sand Creek Massacre.
