Journal of John L. Dailey, 1858-1865
Abstract
The document contains a transcribed compilation of journal entries written by John L. Dailey. Most entries detail day-to-day normalities such as the weather, traveling to and from different camps, budgeting, etc. The document also contains a first-hand account of the Sand Creek Massacre. Dailey's November 29, 1964, journal entry talks about his camp being ordered to fire upon the Natives immediately. The entry recounts a death and injury count for both parties. The entries prior to the date of the massacre describe preparations taken in the days before, and the entries after describe the remaining tension after the Sand Creek Massacre.
