Biographical / Historical

Leopold Mayer was born in Alsace-Lorraine in 1838 and immigrated to New York when he was 11 years old. In 1859, at the beginning of the Colorado gold rush, he began a 70-day walk to Auraria (Denver), Colorado from Levinworth, Kansas. He went into the general merchandise business and served on the second Denver City Council. In 1880, the Leopold and Barbara Mayer and their sons went to Saguache, Colorado, where Leopold Mayer became a rancher and later... founded a bank and dry goods store. He served as a state representative while in Saguache. Leopold and his family moved back to Denver in 1893 and he died in Denver in 1926. Leopold Mayer married his second wife Pauline Schlossmann May 1887 in Chicago.
