Abstract

View down main street of Irwin, Colorado. Exterior of an early May Company wood building can be seen in the left of the photograph with a sign that reads: ''D. May & Co. Square Dealing Clothing Room.'' David May immigrated to Colorado from Bavaria and started his first clothing store in Leadville in 1877. After 1877 David May opened branches of his store in Irwin (1881), Gunnison (1881), Aspen (Johnston & Co. 1886), Glenwood Springs (Manhattan Store, 1887), and Denver (April 12, 1889). The May Company evolved into one of the largest department store chains in the United States.

From the Collection:

The collection contains materials intentionally assembled by the Ira M. and Peryle Hayutin Beck Memorial Archives of Jews in the Rocky Mountain region. The bulk of the photographs are from or related to various towns in Colorado, but the collection also contains photographs from other states in the western United States and other countries. There are some 19th century photograph types represented in the collection, including albumen prints, daguerrotypes, tintypes, post cards, colorized prints, cabinet cards, and cartes-de-visite.
