Abstract

Max Stein and Billy Sisson are seated inside a Willys-Overland automobile, which is decorated for a parade. There is a large sign on the roof of the vehicle which states "Stein's Grocery and Market Quality Without Extravagance Agents Battle Creek Sanitarium Health Foods." John Myers and Albert Stein are standing behind the front of the vehicle, from left to right.

The collection contains materials intentionally assembled by the Ira M. and Peryle Hayutin Beck Memorial Archives of Jews in the Rocky Mountain region. The bulk of the photographs are from or related to various towns in Colorado, but the collection also contains photographs from other states in the western United States and other countries. There are some 19th century photograph types represented in the collection, including albumen prints, daguerrotypes, tintypes, post cards, colorized prints, cabinet cards, and cartes-de-visite.

Inscription and Marks

Handwritten on envelope: "# 386 Stein family of Pueblo, 1900-1960 info inside." Photocopy of handwritten note inside original envelope: "Taken in Pueblo, Colorado between 1913 and 1914. Max Stein arrived in Pueblo in 1898 (he is the man on the right) after serving as a mounted policeman, he began peddling fruit and vegetables from a wagon. About 1910 he opened a retail grocery store at 1156 4th St., Pueblo. The business is still in the same location but has expanded to become a wholesale food company. Marvin Stein, the present owner, is a third-generation Stein." Handwritten note on front of photocopy: "In car, Max Stein, Billy Sisson, L to R, John Myers, Albert Stein."
