Abstract
Formal portrait of Denver Jewish pioneer merchant David Kline, who moved to the city in 1865 and served as the first president of Denver's B'nai B'rith Lodge No. 171. He and Charles Schayer had also been leading members of the Hebrew Burial Society, which evolved into the Hebrew Benevolent Society.

On envelope: ''#171 David Kline, 1872 1st Pres B' B #171''. Note inside envelope: ''David Kline Born: Bohemia 1836. Arrived New Orleans 1855. Navigated the Mississippi to St. Louis and joined a small Bohemian congregation. Crossed the plains from Leavenworth (where he sold dry goods and helped form a Jewish Charitable Society) with his wife in a prairie schooner and settled in Central City. Moved to Denver in 1865. Became merchant First president of B'nai B'rith Lodge #171''. Handwritten on back of photograph: ''#171 David Kline 1st President Denver Lodge No. 171 B'nai B'rith First President 1872 Donor Denver Lodge #171 B'nai B'rith David Kline''.

Scope and Contents
The collection contains materials intentionally assembled by the Ira M. and Peryle Hayutin Beck Memorial Archives of Jews in the Rocky Mountain region. The bulk of the photographs are from or related to various towns in Colorado, but the collection also contains photographs from other states in the western United States and other countries. There are some 19th century photograph types represented in the collection, including albumen prints, daguerrotypes, tintypes, post cards, colorized prints, cabinet cards, and cartes-de-visite.
