Abstract

Joseph Scher was born in Latvia in 1884 and died in Denver in 1969. He emigrated in 1904 and graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a BA degree in Sociology and Economics in 1913. Joseph Scher joined the Immigration Service in 1918 and was an investigator for 32 years. He married Rose Saperstein of Pennsylvania that same year. Their daughter Lillian Marie Scher Goodstein was born in Chicago in 1914 and graduated from the University of Chicago. She was a teacher and school librarian for 8 years and then joined the WAC in 1942. She earned a library degree from the University of Denver and was a school librarian beginning in 1952. In 1949 she married Hyman Goodstein and the couple had three children: Phil, Beth and Judy. She died in Denver in 1978. Hyman A. Robert Goodstein was born in Omaha in 1910 and died in Denver in 1968. He attended East High School in Denver and earned a BA and LL.B. from the University of Denver. The Collection contains personal papers from members of the Goodstein and Scher familiies and photographs of the Goodstein family, including an oversize photograph of Lillian Scher when she was in the WAC during World War II.
