Abstract

Bedside instruction in English and citizenship at the Jewish Consumptives' Relief Society (JCRS). The JCRS was a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients that was founded in 1904 by a group of immigrant Jewish workingmen along with the support of several leading physicians and rabbis in Denver, Colorado. The sanatorium was located on West Colfax Avenue just outside of Denver.

Abstract Blanche Da Costa Whitney was born September 24, 1882 in Chicago. She studied with Rudolph Ganz at Chicago Musical College before joining Mme Schumann-Heink, a noted opera signer, to Europe. Da Costa sang leading opera roles in Germany. She was forced to leave Germany by World War I and returned to America. She had a son, Frederick Berman, by her first husband. Her son died in 1945. She married Warren C. Whitney, vice president of A. B. Chase Piano Company in 1918. They moved to Denver...

Abstract

Brad Bowles, professor of theater at the University of Colorado at Denver, discusses his work with senior citizens to collect biographical stories in order to create plays based on these stories. Reflects on a play he wrote with a student, "The Red Wheelbarrow," and how it led to the creation of what Bowles calls senior theater after a performance at a senior citizen community center. Reflects on his process which includes collecting stories and transforming them into performances.
