Two Jewish men, Simon Bamberger and Henry Altman, were among the founders of Cheyenne in 1867. Jewsh businessmen followed, and the first congregation was incorporated in 1888. B'nai B'rith was established in Cheyenne, Wyoming in 1921.

Abstract

Yiddish-speaking homesteaders from Eastern Europe settled in this remote prairie town in response to free land and a dream of life on the farm. Thirty-one families eventually formed a tight-knit community and organized the Chugwater Yiddishe School, a one-room schoolhouse. Most Jews eventually left, but a few families stayed until the 1930s.

Abstract Clara Goldsmith Weil stands behind a fence prop for a formal portrait. Clara, born in 1860, was the first female Jewish baby born in Denver. Clara's parents, Clara and Henry Goldsmith, had migrated by covered wagon from Leavenworth, Kansas. The elder Clara died in childbirth and her daughter was named after her mother. According to Horace Waters, the family of Meyers Harris was in Boulder during the 1870s and 1880s. He and his wife Jeanett had four daughters (Anna, Sarah, Etta, Rebecca), all of whom were born in Michigan before the family moved to Colorado. The families of Benjamin, Moses, and George B. Holstein were in Boulder and Blackhawk during the 1870s and 80s, where they were involved in the clothing and mining industries (specifically the Cohen Lode).
