Joseph Messing sits on a small table at the Jewish Consumptives' Relief Society (JCRS). He is wearing a cable-knit shawl collar sweater over his shirt and tie. Originally from Poland, he immigrated to the United States on November 5, 1905. Joseph Messing worked in New York City as a cutter, contracted tuberculosis there, and was a patient at the JCRS from December 24, 1923 to February 19, 1924, and from March 30 to June 24, 1925.
