Abstract

The first Jewish settlers in Colorado Springs were more health-seekers than merchants. A B'nai B'rith chapter was organized in 1901, and the Sons of Israel cemetery was created in 1904. Synagogues were founded in 1908 and 1910. Prominent citizens included Isaac Cahn, Isaac Myers, and Louis Ehrich. The community suffered in the 1920s but revived during World War II. The Air Force Academy, with its Jewish officers, enlisted personnel, and cadets, has been an important part of the Colorado Springs Jewish community. In the renowned Academy chapel, there is a small Jewish sanctuary whose foyer features purple, green, and blue stained glass windows.
