West Side, Denver Cecile Samuelson
Abstract
This article describes the community of Eastern European Jews who left failed agricultural colonies iin Cotopaxi and Atwood, Colorado, to join other recently arrived Jews along West Denver's lower Colfax Avenue. At first impoverished and struggling, they took advantage of opportunities to educate their children, buy a house, give tzedakah, and live traditional Jewish lives. By 1913 there were multiple synagogues and a close-knit community in a self-selected "ghetto" neighborhood. The community began to disperse in the 1950s.
